Andrew Johnson

17th President of the United States (1865-1869), who succeeded Abraham Lincoln after his assassination. Johnson's lenient approach to former Confederates and opposition to Black suffrage put him in direct conflict with the Republican-controlled Congress over Reconstruction policy.
